Finding God in the Ordinary: Everyday Faith

Finding-God-in-the-Ordinary.

Finding God in the ordinary doesn’t always happen in the ways we expect. We tend to look for God in the big moments. The mountaintop, the miracle, the answered prayer we can point to. And He is there. But I’ve come to believe that most of the time, God meets us somewhere much quieter: in the ordinary middle of an ordinary day.

The sink full of dishes. The commute. The same three meals you make every week. The work that no one claps for. It can feel like the spiritual part of life is on hold until something significant happens. But Scripture keeps pointing us back to the small and the daily.

“Whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31 (WEB)

Eating. Drinking. Whatever you do. Paul doesn’t reserve the glory of God for the grand gestures. He folds it right into the plainest parts of being human. That tells me the ordinary isn’t a waiting room for the sacred. The ordinary is where the sacred mostly lives.

Finding God in the Ordinary: Learning to Notice His Presence

I think we miss God in the everyday because we’re waiting for Him to feel dramatic. But He’s often in the opposite: the small mercy of a quiet morning, the patience you didn’t know you had, the friend who texted at exactly the right time, the breath in your lungs while you stood at the stove. None of it makes headlines. All of it is grace.

But what about those days when nothing feels peaceful? When you’re tired before your feet even hit the floor? When you’re overwhelmed by responsibilities, bills, family, and a hundred little things that need your attention?

I think those are the days we need to remember God’s presence the most.

Because finding God in the ordinary doesn’t mean every day will feel beautiful or meaningful. Sometimes ordinary life is exhausting. Sometimes you’re simply trying to make it through another day without falling apart.

And that’s okay.

Faith doesn’t require us to pretend we’re happy about everything. We can be grateful and exhausted. We can trust God and still have questions. We can love our families and still need a moment to ourselves.

God doesn’t stop being present simply because our circumstances aren’t pleasant.

Everyday Faith Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

I used to think growing spiritually meant doing more. Praying longer. Reading more Scripture. Being more disciplined. Somehow becoming this version of myself who had everything together.

But I’m learning that faith isn’t always about doing more.

Sometimes it’s about slowing down long enough to recognize what’s already there.

We live in a world that celebrates productivity. Everybody wants to know what you’re accomplishing, building, creating, or working toward. Rarely does anyone ask whether your soul is tired.

But your worth isn’t measured by how much you get done in a day.

You are still worthy of love, grace, and rest when you haven’t accomplished a single thing on your to-do list.

Finding God in the ordinary has helped me think differently about what it means to live faithfully. It isn’t always another task to complete. Sometimes it’s remembering that God is present even when I’m not performing, producing, or proving anything.

5 Simple Ways to Practice Everyday Faith

You don’t need an elaborate morning routine or hours of uninterrupted quiet to begin noticing God’s presence. Here are five simple ways to make room for everyday faith.

1. Invite God Into Your Morning

Before you reach for your phone or start thinking about everything that needs to be done, take a moment to acknowledge God.

It doesn’t have to be a long prayer. Sometimes all you need is, “Lord, help me through this day.”

Finding God in the ordinary can begin before you’ve even gotten out of bed.

2. Turn Everyday Responsibilities Into Moments of Prayer

The laundry becomes a place you can pray. The drive becomes quiet with God. The work you do, whether anyone notices or not, can be done as unto Him.

You don’t have to stop everything to connect with God. You can talk to Him while preparing dinner, cleaning the kitchen, or getting ready for work.

And those responsibilities don’t have to become another spiritual assignment. The point isn’t to add pressure. It’s to remember that you aren’t alone while handling the things already on your plate.

3. Pay Attention to Small Blessings

Sometimes we’re so focused on what hasn’t happened that we overlook what already has.

Maybe today wasn’t perfect, but someone made you laugh. Maybe you’re struggling financially, but you found a moment of peace. Maybe you didn’t finish everything on your list, but you made it through a difficult day.

Gratitude doesn’t require us to ignore our problems. It allows us to recognize goodness even while those problems exist.

That’s another part of finding God in the ordinary: learning to appreciate moments we might otherwise dismiss.

4. Be Honest With God About Your Exhaustion

You don’t have to pretend you’re strong every minute of the day.

If you’re tired, tell Him. If you’re frustrated, tell Him. If you’re disappointed with how life is unfolding, bring that to Him, too.

Faith isn’t the absence of difficult emotions. It’s choosing to remain in relationship with God while experiencing them.

Some days, your most honest prayer might simply be, “Lord, I’m tired.”

And that is still a prayer.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Rest

Not everything has to be accomplished today.

There will always be another dish, another responsibility, another problem waiting for your attention.

Sometimes finding God in the ordinary means recognizing when it’s time to stop.

Sit down. Read a few verses. Enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. Take a walk. Allow yourself to exist without feeling guilty for not being productive.

Rest doesn’t make you less faithful, and exhaustion isn’t proof that you’re doing enough.

Finding God Right Where You Are

There’s freedom in this. If God is only in the big moments, most of your life is spiritually empty space. But if He’s in the ordinary, then every unremarkable day can become an opportunity to recognize His presence.

You don’t have to wait until your finances improve, your relationships make sense, your children are grown, or your life finally looks the way you imagined.

You don’t have to wait for a mountaintop.

You can meet God today, right in the middle of whatever is in front of you.

Even if today looks exactly like yesterday.

Even if the only thing you accomplished was making it through.

A Little Takeaway

Pick one ordinary thing you’ll do today—washing a dish, answering an email, sitting in the quiet—and let it be a small place you notice God.

You don’t have to feel anything dramatic. Just turn your attention toward Him in the middle of the plain.

Finding God in the ordinary isn’t about creating a perfect spiritual life. It’s about remembering His presence in the life you’re already living.

A Prayer for Ordinary Days

Lord, help me find You here, in the ordinary middle of my day. Not just in the big moments I’m waiting for, but in the dishes, the work, the small and unremarkable things.

Open my eyes to the grace that’s already all around me. Let me do even the plain things for Your glory.

Remind me that even when life feels repetitive or overwhelming, Your presence is not limited to extraordinary circumstances.

Teach me to appreciate the small blessings, release the pressure to do everything, and find rest in knowing that You are here with me.

Amen.
